THINGS TO DO IN HARWICH

The Electric Palace is a beautiful Art Deco building with many Art Nouveau features.  It was built in 1911 and was renovated and reopened in 1981 after being closed in 1956.  It still has its original screen and shows films at the weekends.   It is an amazing and unique venue for an art exhibition.

The Treadmill Crane was built in 1667 and now stands on Harwich Green.  It originally stood in the Navyard.   It is said that this is the only example of a two wheel man operated crane.  It was quite dangerous to operate as there were no brakes.

The Maritime Museum was previously known as the Low Lighthouse which was built in 1818 to replace the previous wooden structures that no longer exist, built in the 17th century.

The museum houses all sorts of nautical memorabilia.  There are displays on the Royal Navy, and local commercial shipping. The top floor offers an amazing view of the harbour.

The Martitime Museum is open from 10am to 4pm, 1st May to the middle of September, closed on Wednesdays.

The Treadmill Crane

Harwich Maritime Museum

Harwich is an historical town and has many points of interest.  It is a busy port and has been used throughout history as a fort.  It has a very nautical feel but also there is a beautiful award winning Blue Flag beach in Dovercourt.  Peace and quiet is never far away if that is what you seek or you might like to sit on the pier and watch the estuary drinking a coffee or perhaps outside the Pier Hotel with a glass of wine.   Fine dining is available if you are looking for more than a drink.  Local beer is also available at the Bell Inn.  Harwich is a quaint, small town and has a strong association with the Mayflower.  Dovercourt is a popular destination for the whole family with it's Blue Flag beautiful beach, a park, children's playgrounds, swimming pool, a small boating lake full of beautiful swans, skate park and a small roller skating rink.

The Wireless and Television Museum

Also known as the High Lighthouse.  This building along with the Low Lighthouse were used to aid navigation into Harwich Harbour. It was built in 1818 but was not used after 1862.

From the sea the low light house should  have appeared in line with the High lighthouse above.  This would indicate a safe passage into the harbour. This lighthouse also replaced one of the earlier wooden constructions.

The Wireless and television museum is open at the weekend in the afternoon during the summer.  For more information click HERE
