Artist Statement

My work inhabits the ground between figurative and abstraction. I am influenced by Fauvism and Expressionism.  Starting with random marks on canvas I build up an image using shapes and line. For me painting is an emotional response. My choice of colours is often intuitive enabling me to create a sense of mood and atmosphere and show a personal interpretation. I work in a variety of media to create different textures to give the painting additional interest, from the chaos of the underpainting and with the use of collage, colour and mixed media I try to establish some order to define the essence of the subject
